Nick Kristof Lecture at NYU

On Monday, March 26th 2012, New York University hosted a lecture with Nicholas Kristof, New York Times columnist who champions human rights causes that affect those living in poverty and oppression, regarding his latest book ‘Half the Sky’ which he co-author with his wife Sheryl WuDunn. Needless to say, a group of ladies from the WoV NYC chapter were in attendance. It was an exciting opportunity for our chapter since during last summer we read ‘Half the Sky’ for our summer book club.

‘Half the Sky’ is written as a collection of essays containing the stories of women around the world overcoming oppression. The lecture focused on sharing more about some stories from the book, and we were delighted to even hear stories that didn’t make it to the book. The main idea Mr. Kristof tries to convey through his message is that not only the oppression of women should be the cause we rally together to eradicate during this century, but also that empowering women not only changes her life but that of their children, household and even her village.

Certainly we couldn’t agree more with Mr. Kristof. Through our chapter we continue to look for ways to educate ourselves about the causes affecting women. If you are interested in becoming part of the solution to the issues affecting women, we invite you to join our coming summer book club. The first step in changing the world around is, is for us to become educated about the issues we want to eradicate. Stay tune for more information regarding our summer book club which will start by the end of May.
